EMC ranked by the WTA as one the Fastest Teleport Operators in the world
The World Teleport Association ranking lists Emerging Markets Communications
(EMC) among “The Fast Top Five” Teleport Operators.
New York City, November 11, 2008 -- The World Teleport Association (WTA) announced today its rankings of the Top Teleport Operators of 2008, providing a unique look into the diverse teleport sector of the global communications industry. Rankings are reported in three categories: the Global Top Twenty, the Independent Top Twenty, and the Fast Twenty.
Emerging Markets Communications has once again earned a position in two of the three rankings: the Independent Top Twenty and the Fast Twenty. In the latest achieved the 5th position in the fastest growing companies list.
According to what was released by the WTA, “the Independent Top Twenty ranks companies based on revenue from all sources, but exclude companies whose core business is ownership and operation of a satellite fleet or terrestrial network. These twenty companies have a proven track record and commitment to innovation and providing value-added services”.
Regarding the Fast Twenty, WTA said that it ranks “all teleport-operating companies based on year-over-year revenue growth in their most recent fiscal years”.
The Association also explained that the Top Operator rankings are compiled by surveying teleport operators around the world on their facilities, services and business results. The WTA also stated that these rankings provide a unique insight into the often unappreciated realities of the teleport sector.
"Our most recent study of the sector, titled New Markets, New Services, New Competition, illustrates the great diversity of the teleport sector in terms of customers and industries served," said Robert Bell, WTA Executive Director. “The commercial teleport business got its start up linking video for TV channels. That still contributes 35% of the sector's revenues, but terrestrial carriers, enterprises and government combined now contribute over 47%. The entrepreneurial spirit that got this industry on its feet will, no doubt, serve it well as the industry negotiates the current financial uncertainties and the certain changes still to come.”
“We are very proud of being listed again in the Top Twenty Rankings of the World Teleport Association. Their recognition is a great honor. 2008 has been a great year for EMC. We successfully doubled our installed customer base while completing installations in over a 120 countries in all continents. EMC also has secured its ability to continue its accelerated growth by establishing strategic relationships and purchase agreements for the next 15 years for satellite capacity. Since its birth, EMC has maintained steady growth, not only in terms of revenue but also the number of remote installations around the world. The plan for 2009 is to continue the investment in our customers, operations and employees”, said Abel Avellan, President of EMC.

EMC Supports IOM's Humanitarian Efforts
IOM's humanitarian commitment and EMC's logistic support at an emergency situation ensured a quick channelling of assistance tasks in the Tsunami-affected areas.
MIAMI, US - MAY 2005 - Emerging Markets Communications Inc. (EMC), a leading company in the provision of satellite communications services, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the leading international organization working with migrants and governments to provide humane responses to migration challenges, have joined efforts to provide relief assistance in South Asia following the Tsunami disaster. Taking into account the urgency of the situation, they accomplished their mission in record time.
In December 2004, one of the worst natural disasters in the last 100 years stroke the world. As a consequence of an earthquake in the Indian Ocean, a tsunami swept across vast coastal areas in several countries of the region, killing hundreds of thousands of people, and destroying thousands of homes and means of livelihood. This tragedy generated an immediate response from the IOM, which needed communication infrastructure solutions to quickly set up in remote areas to connect to its corporate data and voice network.
The IOM was aware of EMC's successful track record with UN World Food Programme and others. And while industry standard installation lead times for satellite sites are between 60 and 90 days, EMC took the commitment to shorten the deadlines. EMC was already involved in providing links in the area to the UN WFP, and was able to switch some of its staff from Nairobi to help speed up the installation and other logistical processes to get the IOM site on line as soon as possible.
In that situation, a real milestone was achieved: From the first telephone conversation between David John, EMC's European Business Manager, and Bernardo Mariano, IOM's Chief ITS Information Technology and Communications, to the installation of the link, the process of providing connectivity and communications took 3 weeks, and further amendments to the service were then carried out over the next 4 weeks.
Nowadays, the IOM uses voice over IP and Internet connectivity provided by EMC, which allows it to offer logistical support in the form of transportation, medical assistance, shelters and civil military cooperation. The IOM has transported relief goods for several international and national donors, the International Committee of the Red Cross, UN agencies, international governmental organizations, national and international NGOs, and foreign military forces.
"For the first time, the IOM emergency site had reliable communication which made a huge difference to our operations. Our business users were all very happy with the solution implemented which greatly improved their ability to operate and deliver the required assistance to our beneficiaries. EMC speed and efficiency has positively impressed us," says Bernardo Mariano.
This process has highlighted EMC's key strengths in logistics and organisation and the resulting ability to respond quickly to an emergency situation. "This is due to the fact that our organisational infrastructure of people and offices is based in and around the more difficult areas of the world," explains David John. He also highlights the contribution made by AT&T, which provided the landline circuit connecting the EMC teleport in Redditch to Geneva, as well as the overall project management.
As an active member of the United Nations, the IOM ensures the cooperation of collective efforts aimed at meeting the needs of the most vulnerable. With offices and operations in every continent, it helps governments and the civil society through rapid humanitarian responses to sudden migration flows, post-emergency return and reintegration programmes, assistance to migrants on their way to new homes and lives, migration medical and public health programmes, etc.
